Use 不 for general and intended actions

不 bù commonly negates present habits, general facts, descriptions, and future intentions. Place it directly before the verb or adjective: 我不去北京 wǒ bú qù Běijīng means I am not going to Beijing, and 他不是医生 tā bú shì yīshēng means he is not a doctor.

Before a fourth-tone syllable, 不 is normally pronounced bú with a rising second tone. This tone change appears in common combinations such as 不是 bú shì and 不去 bú qù.

  • 我不喝茶。— I do not drink tea.
  • 他不是老师。— He is not a teacher.
  • 我们不去上海。— We are not going to Shanghai.
  • 这个书不好。— This book is not good.

Use 没有 to negate possession

The negative of 有 is 没有 méiyǒu, not 不有. 我没有车 wǒ méiyǒu chē means I do not have a car. 她没有哥哥 tā méiyǒu gēge means she does not have an elder brother.

In a short answer, 没有 can stand alone. If someone asks 你有中文书吗, you may answer 没有, I do not have one.

  • 我有钱。→ 我没有钱。
  • 他有朋友。→ 他没有朋友。
  • 我们有课。→ 我们没有课。
  • 她有新车。→ 她没有新车。

Use 没 for completed actions

没 méi commonly negates an action that did not happen or has not happened. 我没去 wǒ méi qù means I did not go. 我没吃饭 wǒ méi chīfàn means I did not eat or have not eaten.

Beginners can remember a useful contrast: 不 often describes what someone does not do, will not do, or generally is not; 没 often says that an event did not occur. Context determines the best English tense.

  • 我不喝咖啡。— I do not drink coffee.
  • 我今天没喝咖啡。— I did not drink coffee today.
  • 他不去北京。— He is not going to Beijing.
  • 他昨天没去北京。— He did not go to Beijing yesterday.

Choose the negative from the meaning

Do not select 不 or 没 only by translating an English word such as “not.” First decide whether the sentence describes identity, a general or intended action, possession, or a completed event.

For identity with 是, use 不是. For possession with 有, use 没有. For a habitual or future action, 不 is often appropriate. For an action that did not occur, use 没 before the action verb.

  • Identity: 他不是医生。
  • Possession: 他没有车。
  • Habit: 他不喝茶。
  • Past event: 他昨天没喝茶。

Contrast practice from the original course

Read each positive sentence, make it negative, and explain why you selected 不 or 没. Then create one personal example for each category. This contrast practice is adapted from Lecture 9 of Abdul Azeem’s original book.

Say the pairs aloud so the grammar and pronunciation develop together. Pay attention to the tone change in 不是 and to the third tone in 有 when it follows 没.

  • 我是老师。— Make it negative.
  • 我有一本书。— Make it negative.
  • 我每天去学校。— Make it negative.
  • 我昨天去了学校。— Say that you did not go.
  • 他来拉合尔。— Give a future negative and a past negative.
