The consonant a syllable starts with, such as b, zh or x. Some syllables have no initial at all (first row, marked —).

The vowel part that follows, such as ang or iao. Without an initial, i, u and ü are written y, w and yu.
The same syllable changes meaning with its tone: mā (mother), má (hemp), mǎ (horse), mà (scold). Listen and repeat each one.
