Learn useful groups, not a random list

HSK 1 vocabulary covers people, numbers, time, places, everyday objects, and common actions. Grouping related words helps you build connections and use them in short conversations.

Start with pronouns and question words, then add high-frequency verbs and nouns. Review each word with its characters, pinyin, tone, meaning, and an example sentence.

  • People: 我, 你, 他, 她, 我们
  • Questions: 什么, 谁, 哪, 怎么, 多少
  • Actions: 是, 有, 去, 来, 看, 听, 说, 学习
  • Time: 今天, 明天, 昨天, 现在, 点, 分钟

Turn vocabulary into sentences

A word becomes useful when you can retrieve it in context. Combine new words with a small set of sentence frames such as 我喜欢…, 这是…, and 你有…吗? Change one element at a time to create several examples.

Say every example aloud. This adds pronunciation and tone practice to vocabulary review and helps you recognize the same words in listening exercises.

Use spaced review

Review new words soon after learning them and then at gradually longer intervals. Mix recognition questions with recall: sometimes choose the meaning, and sometimes produce the Chinese word without seeing it.

Mark words that you repeatedly miss and use them in personal sentences. A meaningful example is often easier to remember than a generic translation.

Prepare for the exam format

Vocabulary study should support listening and reading, not remain a translation exercise. Use short recordings and timed questions so you become comfortable recognizing words at natural speed.

After learning the core list, complete sample HSK tasks and review why each incorrect answer was tempting. Our video lesson library includes guided HSK practice for continued preparation.
